Gifts Idea

It’s the end of the year, most of us will be busy wrapping up 2011, slow down and clearing our leaves. It’s also time to do a bit/serious reflection (depending on your situation) and also making little plans to move on. It’s also the time of the year where we will see the increase rate of wedding dinners, annual dinners, end of the year parties etc… especially with 11.11.2011 just 3 days away I believe wedding bells will be sound at every corner.
I have an upcoming wedding dinner in 2 weeks time, instead of the traditional “Ang Pow” for the couple, I will be giving the couple this:

Mr. & Mrs. Moo, the inseparable couple.

Mr. Mrs. Moo will be an ideal gift for the perfect couple. The pair can serve as a decorative item in the new couple’s bedroom and doubled as a pillow, a sweet pillow to lay down their heads after the hustle and bustle of the wedding preparation. Well the wedding is but a ceremony to mark the starting point of the journey of marriage, Mr. & Mrs. Moo can serve as a reminder that it takes two to make a marriage works, I mean real hard labour of love. I am a strong advocate that we need to personalize the gifts to our loved ones, to compliment the gift, a personal hand written message taken from 1 Corinthian 13:4-8 will be bundled with the gift, put the message into a red packet! Voila the perfect gift is ready for the happy couple! I wish I could be married again (to the same man of course!).

Oh yeah….. almost forgotten… if you are interested, please contact Ms. Joanne for a special discount at the following:

Mama I love you!

The new semester had just started, as usual during the first week of the semester , blood pressure shoot up, heart pulse increase and I was like a mad lady attending to over 300 students and at the same time juggling all the consultation sessions in between the classes. Yesterday after such session I was totally drained out and suddenly I had an incoming sms with the following message (I copied 100%):

Sender: Mil (from mother in-law's handphone)
ma ma ^ ^ mummy, how are you? I am good. i love you (by emily)

Well, suddenly my heart was at peace, pressure went down and I grinned while looking at the message again and again, my 7 year old girl sure made my day.

I replied with the following message:

Mummy is good and fine, love you too :)

My last 30 something birthday

I started this blog in Sept ’07 and for those who have been following my blog since its inception, initially it is named “Thirty something”. As time passed, I realized the name may not be applicable as I aged so “Lessons of life” is more appropriate.

I celebrated my last 30 something birthday last Thursday. For the very first time I took a day off from work, so did hubby. We went for a brief cycling trip at Gertak Sanggul, went for a drive to hubby’s new project location, confirmed on a garden set (the long over due item hubby owed me). By then it was approaching noon, we settled the children’s lunch, washed up and sent the girls to school.

Next we headed to a nice cozy restaurant for lunch, did some shopping, visited a friend and dropped by at our favourite “jati” furniture shop to select the long over due dressing table. Hubby’s pocket was definitely in pain that day. The day ended with lots of kisses and hugs from my two princesses.

As I reflect my life I thank God for His providence and guidance. I realized that without Him I would be a totally different person and would be experiencing a totally different journey of life. Life is not a bed roses but He is there to guide and carry me each step of the day. I would like to quote again what I shared during our Church’s Christmas celebration – “The family that I was brought up in, the siblings that I have, my choice of faith, life-partner, career and all life’s decisions, I realized that none of the incidences that happened in my life were merely coincidence, instead all of them were specially crafted by my Creator for in Psalms 139:13-14, it says:

“For you created my inmost being,
You knit me together in my mother’s womb,
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Your works are wonderful”

I thank God for a wonderful 39 full solid years of my life and by God’s grace looking forward for many years to come.

Sad News

I received a terrible bad news yesterday, one of my ex-colleagues from my first company was diagnosed with thyroid cancer (advance stage), in addition he was in coma due to a tubing procedure that went wrong.

The news broke my heart, we have had the opportunity to work for 3 years before he resigned and start up his own business. Though majority of the time spent with him was on job assignments and in a professional work setting, such news really gave me a big blow. My heart goes to his wife and children.

I went to the hospital to visit him last evening after work, have the opportunity to spend time with his wife and to understand his situation. I could not possibly understand the emotional turmoil that is in her but thank God externally she looks strong. We held hands and prayed together, that’s what I thought we could do for the family at this point of time.

As far as I’ve known this colleague of mine, he is a fighter, we prayed that he will remain one at this difficult situation. Though his condition looks pessimistic, his wife shared that he is determined to fight this battle and somehow deep inside me I know he will.

I’m not going to judge and question the doctors’ capability in addressing my colleague’s condition, for they are human themselves but some words of thought:

1) Always get a second opinion if the first doctor’s advice is to go for a surgery
2) Reputable doctors are busy doctors, they may not have the time for you, select with wisdom
3) Understand all possible complications, educate yourself about your illness/condition and communicate all symptoms promptly to the medical team, it could save lives
4) Pray for discernment and wisdom from God, He is our great physician

My blood test is due soon and I’m going to order for a cancer marker to be performed, please do so yourself, early detection could save lives. EFV – Exercise and take more Fruits and Vegetables.

Class of '89

Before - 1978 - Then, when we were 6 years old

After - 2010 - Now, when we were 3X years old

Last Saturday my family and I made a trip down to KL, mainly for my high school (Class of ’89) gathering. We made a stop at Kampar, picked up my dad and off we drove to my sister’s place for a 3 days 2 nights trip.

When one of my friend (Gek Soon, wonderful guy, thumbs up to him and the rest who chipped in to arrange things for this gathering) posted on FB that the gathering is on, I was a few early birds that actually clicked “Accept” to the event invitation. Soon after many who were aware of the event also clicked “Accept” and in 2-3 months time we have over 20 who confirmed their presence and on that day itself almost 50 turned up (some with spouse and kids).

As hubby dropped me at the hotel lobby and I took the lift up to the venue, I’ve mixed feeling, it’s like every step I took leads me down to memory lane.. 38, 37, 36 and when the lift finally opened and I stepped into the private hall I was 17 again. Truly it was like 17 again. I began to see familiar faces and as I walk further into the room it was like back in the good old high school times. We hugged, shoke hands and exchanged those familiar nostalgic smile with one another, it was awesome and amazing.

It’s really nice to know that those who turned up are doing well and in best of health, of course after some 21 long donkey years, appearance wise some have gone bald, some double the size, some never change with their ever famous hairstyle but deep inside everyone I could see, feel and smell the 17 year old in us that night.

I would say we all made it, maybe not exactly what we inspired to be in our younger days, we all turned out to be fine individuals contributing to the society in one way or another and most of us are raising kids of our own.

Well, I don’t actually get to catch up with each of them but seeing them that night was truly magical. When we got back, posted our photos over FB, from the comments posted, it seems that we could not get enough of each other, 4 hours that night was really too short for us.

So we are planning for the next big one, some suggested that we have it on the 31.08.2014 (that will be our 25th Anniversary) and the venue will be in Kampar, our dear hometown, that would be wonderful. I’m imagining us walking through our school compound, lying on the big field, taking “loh shue fun, chee cheong fun, loh mai fan etc…” and with a wide grin on our faces.

Class of ’89 is surely a great gang. Long live all of us so that we may be able to gather years after years. God bless all of you.

To catch some of our photos (now and then), please click here… and try to spot me :D

Dream #2 fulfilled

This is a sequence of my previous entry on achieving dreams, here I am sharing with you one of my dreams achieved, Dream # 2.

Dream # 2 – Going to Disneyland
I cannot recall when I was first introduced to this magical land called Disneyland. I guessed probably through Disney cartoons that I watched from our old black/white TV back in the late 1970s.

All I know is Disneyland is a place for every kid, young and old from 2 – 92 years old. So you see there’s no exception for me, I dreamt of going to Disneyland one day and took the ever famous “It’s a small world” ride and of course to meet up with Mickey in person. Though I don’t know much about this place until I grown much older but all I knew back then is going there will cost a bomb and my parents could never afford it.

So… my this childhood dream was kind of slowly getting off/deleted from my mind until in year 2000. This is the year where the first manufacturing company I worked with earned the most and where the revenue grown many hundreds fold, it was also a year where we worked the hardest and also a year where I had a miscarriage too.

After recovered from the D&C, my lady boss actually proposed to our HQ that the senior staffs deserved a good reward and demanded that 4 of us be entitled for an overseas trip. At first we opted for New Zealand but due to last minute booking we were not able to find any tour operator that could accommodate us for such a short notice, my boss then later decided that we should go to Japan.

One of the itineraries was to visit Disneyland Tokyo, how delighted I was! Suddenly my childhood dream resurfaced and I felt like a kid again. Best of all my hubby got to go for the trip also, 100% funded by the company! Wow, this is what we called double blessings!

So from 23 Dec 2000 to 1 Jan 2001 we were in Japan and we got to countdown in Disneyland, Tokyo on 31-12-2000.

Below are some snapshots of us in the magical world.
Our passport to the magical land!

The hero of Disneyland, can't leave without meeting Mickey! We waited and queued so long..
The happy Tigger and I, I chose to be like Tigger!

Ah, the long awaited "small world" ride..

Hubby and I with Cinderella's castle as backdrop..

Ah, the ever famour Disney parade.

More than over 20 years later since I first captured this vision, I’m delighted to announce that - YES, I DID WENT FOR THE “It’s a small world” boat ride in the magical kingdom after all.
Dream # 2 achieved!

The Last Lecture - Prof. Randy Pausch

"Your last lecture" if you are a lecturer and were given a final chance to deliver just one last lecture, what will you share and tell your students? I remembered hubby once downloaded this video and asked me to listen to it but I was not able to do it then, this morning I stumbled upon it while doing my daily devotion over the internet. I downloaded it and thought that anyone out there may learn something out of Prof. Randy Pausch's final lecture. You will hear that in one of his final comments, he stated that he believe in Karma, as a Christian I do not believe in Karma but I do believe that we will sow whatever we reap according to Galatians 6:7-8

Some notes that I personally jotted down:
When you do something wrong and if there's someone to tell you off or criticize you, it means they haven't given up hope on you..

What are the dreams you have? Walls are there to see if you really want that dream bad enough to achieve them..

When you want to pass the baton, pass to someone better than you

The best thing a teacher can do is to get your students to be self-reflective

To achieve your dreams or to become the person you are capable of being rest in the people around you, your parents, mentors, friends, colleagues, students...

Final note that stick into my mind - Do not focus on yourself but on others... Philippians 2:3-4

Most of his notes I can relate to dedicated bible verses.. may you be encouraged.

Before I was a Mum

I received below write-ups through an e-mail this morning and I believe it echoes the little thoughts of most of the mummies out there. To all awesome mummies out there “Blessed Mother’s Day”, to those who are not a mother yet, take this opportunity to express your love to this wonderful woman of your life, to those who have lost their mother, recollect those special memories you have had with her.

Before I was a Mum,
I never tripped over toys
or forgot words to a lullaby.
I didn't worry whether or not
my plants were poisonous.
I never thought about immunizations.

Before I was a Mum,
I had never been puked on.
Pooped on.
Chewed on.
Peed on.
I had complete control of my mind
and my thoughts.
I slept all night.

Before I was a Mum,
I never held down a screaming child
so doctors could do tests.
Or give shots.
I never looked into teary eyes and cried.
I never got gloriously happy over a simple grin.
I never sat up late hours at night
watching a baby sleep.

Before I was a Mum,
I never held a sleeping baby just because
I didn't want to put her down.
I never felt my heart break into a million pieces
when I couldn't stop the hurt.
I never knew that something so small
could affect my life so much.
I never knew that I could love someone so much.
I never knew I would love being a Mum.

Before I was a Mum,
I didn't know the feeling of
having my heart outside my body..
I didn't know how special it could feel
to feed a hungry baby.
I didn't know that bond
between a mother and her child.
I didn't know that something so small
could make me feel so important and happy.

Before I was a Mum,
I had never gotten up in the middle of the night
every 10 minutes to make sure all was okay.
I had never known the warmth,
the joy,
the love,
the heartache,
the wonderment
or the satisfaction of being a Mum.
I didn't know I was capable of feeling so much,
before I was a Mum

Now that I’m a mum I can totally relate to the author’s thoughts. Have a wonderful week ahead.

Nostalgia

Just the other day hubby and I were talking about good old times.. I told him what we have in Kampar 3o over years ago and decided to blog about it.

Nostalgia 1: The lady who sold "tau fu fa" (Tauhua in cantonese)
There was this chinese lady, probably in her late 40s or younger but I can still remember she probably look older than her age due to hard labour earning ends meet (I can still pictured her - lines on her forehead with dark complexion). She has a powerful and high pitch voice and balanced two big wooden drums on a wooden pole (like the scene in the old kungfu movies where people used to do that when they need to fetch water from the river.. hope you can imagine that). She will shout "Tau fu fa, tau fu fa", often times my mom will ask us to go out, stopped her and ordered a few bowls of the sweet and smooth desert. In one of the drum holds an inner metal drum which consist of the "tauhua" and in the other drum holds bowls, utensils and some water. She used to ask us for some water for cleaning as she could not possibly carry all the water she needs. Mind you she only walked and I don't think we could imagine the hard labour she has to go through for the sake of making a decent living.

Nostalgia 2: The old man who provide sharpening services
Now there was this particular old chinese man, almost toothless and once a while he will popped at our main gate and shouted "anything to sharpen? Knives or scissors". Mom will always ask us to open the gate, invite the old man in and digged whatever scissors and knives that we have at home. He will then sit on the floor, took out his sharpener and began sharpening each tools, he will then cleaned them and returned the tools to us well sharpened and sparkling clean. Mom always rewarded him more than he asked, he used to return to us the extra but mom insisted he keeps it. So for a few years whenever he is in town (I guess), he never fails to appear at our main gate, there were times the interval was so long, we thought and asked if he's still alive. When he did appeared at our door step we were so happy to see him and opened the gate for him, took out a pair of scissors (sometimes need no sharpening) and just see his hands working. Somehow I understood that mom don't want him to feel bad feeling old (useless) and merely passed him some notes though we could see man of his age really should be resting at home. But then he may not have a home. I cannot remember when he stopped coming but we guessed he must have moved on... hopefully I'll get to meet him in heaven someday.

Nostalgia 3: The roti man
The roti man, a skinny indian man always with a "cerut" in his mouth and occasionally chewing "sirih". He is more advanced compared to the tauhua lady and old "sharpener" man as he owned a bicycle fixed with a big blue wooden box on it. Whenever he is approaching (about 8.00pm) he will ring his bell and we could hear him almost half a mile away. I will run out, wait for him in front of my house and ordered the famous "roti planta" (bread with planta) or "roti kelapa" (coconut bun). Sometimes mom will ask me to help the roti man pushed his bicycle up the slope and together we will count "satu, dua, tiga" and with all my might pushed the bicycle up together with him. He will then sell his bread to the neighbouring area and by 9.30pm or so we can always hear him charging down the slope, making the all too familiar bumping sound as he crossed the metal drain's cover right in front of our house. There are times if we missed him on his way up, we will normally on standby mode to stop him on his way down. Just the other day while at the traffic light I saw this familiar scene, another roti man, also with a blue wooden box but now on a motorbike.

Time has indeed changed the way things were... now our neighboring tauhua man drives a van, there's no more manual sharpening services and our roti man is on a motorbike. As I recalled the good old times, it makes me feel like a little girl all over again.

Lessons from the garden

As I tender my garden, it opened up my eyes to lessons of life. Some blossoming plants are here for the day and gone tomorrow, it teaches me that life is fragile, we could have it today and lose it tomorrow, so we ought to live life to the fullest. Some plants failed to yield until you decided to give it a shock by trimming it completely bald, it may seems that you are doing harm than good until you realized that it thrives into a healthy plant. In certain life circumstances, we need to take risk and who knows the best is waiting for us out there.

Certain plants may look nice from the outside but as time goes by, you realized it is not growing comparing to the rest, I decided to uproot it and then I realized it was infected by hidden insects and the roots were rotten. Sometimes our life reach a stagnant point, there’s no growing, all we need is to do self-reflection and see if we are infected by urgent/unimportant things/sins in life, we will find new meaning of life once the stronghold has been identified and removed.

There was an occasion where the mother plant is withering and dying but as I looked deep underneath the soil, a new life has begun in the form of a little tiny child plant. Sometimes the old has to go to make way for the new, unless we died to our old-self , the new will not emerge.

I’m sure a lot of gardeners experienced this, the plant was clogged up with many unfriendly and sometimes deadly weeds…. We need to be mindful of the quiet weeds that may be growing in our life, failure to do that may choke us in the end.

Some plants just don’t need that extra watering, in fact most plants will die of over watered rather than under watered. That taught me that we should be careful of what we are indulging ourselves in or pampering our child with, what we thought were good actually works the other way round.

It’s amazing how much one can learned out of each situation, only if we care to think about it, so I hope the next time you worked on your garden, spend time in your hobby or merely doing those routine task… reflect on life lessons you can learned out of it. Have a great weekend ahead 

Why things are not smooth sailing...

A very close friend asked me why bad things happened to us and worst still why bad things happened at a time when we thought we had it all, it could be at the peak of our career, the best years of our lives, the smooth sailing and have it all moment… To that question I honestly told her that I don’t know but one thing I’m sure of is it happened for a purpose. God allows it to happen for a good purpose in His special plan for each of His children…The following quote came to me:

“God didn't promise days without pain,
laughter without sorrow,
sun without rain,
but He did promise
strength for the day,
comfort for the tears
and light for the way.”

So even we do not understand now (most often times we don’t), we will when He decides to reveal to us.

Coming to think of her question… it made me think why certain “bad” things happened to me and below are some reveals from the Lord..

* Why I had to suffer a break-up in the first serious relationship – so that I could find someone who is just right for me and that someone is my loving hubby for the past 10 years
* Why I had to go through a miscarriage when I was first diagnosed as a mother – so that I could comfort those who are in the same position
* Why my mom had to leave us in such a short period of time – so that I see the urgency of salvation in her life
* Why I had to leave the comfort of my 10 over years secured career and landed for something which pays me only ½ of what I used to earn – so that I realized the gift in me, use it, and yet not bothered by material accumulation

Only God knows why, at the mean time all we need to do is to cling on to Him.

Happy new year, we're back!

Happy new year!

Hi I’m back, it has been quite a while since I last updated this blog, if you are wondering what has been happening to me and my loved ones for the past month, well we sort of recovered from the poxy thing, started to wallop simply everything though some advised that we should still abstain from certain food.. bad mummy with no self control!!

We have moved to our new place on the brand new year day – 01.01.2010 though it was not 100% completed (stubborn me, since time is not at our side and the goal is to move in before school reopens, we barged into our new home anyway).

To break the “moving house and unpacking record”, MIL, hubby and I cleared all 50 over boxes in two days working around the clock from the wee hours in the morning to the late hours in the evenings. Then barely a day for us to rest, the kids need to go back to school and me to the college to start a brand new semester with added responsibilities.

All this lead to an episode of gigantic gastric which started from my birthday to the end of the week and numbness to my right toe. Thank God I’ve recovered fully from gastric but till now still experiencing numbness to my right toe, I would appreciate if anyone out there knows what could be the possible cause?? A check from the internet reveals a whole list of possible diseases!! Hubby suggested that I try walking bare foot in the garden every morning to improve blood circulation…. Let’s see if this helps!

On another note, living in the new house has been both a blessed and frustrated experience. Blessed because it is through the grace of God that we can stay in this new place, frustrated in the sense that though already in our third week yet I still feel kind of disoriented… I find myself rummaging and searching for things, switching on and off the wrong switches, forgetting where I left things, opening and closing the wrong cabinets/drawers, walking up and down the stairs aimlessly… wish everything are labeled and I can clearly tag them like what they did in hypermarkets…. But then again I don’t think it’s a good idea. Guess we need more time to adjust to how things are being run here..

We are not planning for any house warming but probably will open up to some close friends and neighbors for fellowship over meals…. At the mean time, we are now targeting the garden. Do stay tune for before and after effect of our new home soon….till then.. bye

Time flies..

Time flies and the semester is coming to an end. Just finished marking my students' assignments and they will be having their exam in the next 2 weeks. The staff room will be undergoing a major renovation and we are adviced to pack our stuff... so the whole of this week the staff room will be in total mess....

I enjoyed my teaching here and I'm glad to make this switch. Just this morning somebody from Dell called and asked if I'm interested in their position as Training and Development Manager, I wondered how they got my contact, must be from a position that I applied ages ago... I told her I'm not interested at this point of time.. I may be saying no to a potentially high figured salary job but no regrets.. somehow I'm sure this is what I wanted to do now, have not been feeling this fulfilled for the entire 13 years in employment.

I wondered if I've changed... :)

Herb "Angel"

Three in the family suffered series of indigestion that resulted in vomitting, diarrhea and windy stomachs. Guess who? Answer: DEM (daddy, emily and mummy). Happened on different timing but not far from each other, 3 of us were down in bed most of the time, I slept from 3 - 6pm, then 9pm to 6am yesteray, Emily basically the same while daddy sort of recovered as he had it earlier.

On 1/2 medical leave yesterday and when I got back from class this morning, a colleague placed a container with leaves soaked in water on my desk with this note:
"Ms. E, chew this and digest it, drink the water after that , from your angel".

Earlier on this "angel" of mine was suggesting that there was this plant on the way to the library building (my college has a collection of spice garden), asked me to pluck some of the leaves, chew it, supposingly help to relieve my digestion problem. I was quite skeptical and just ignored him lar.

After lunch, he insisted that I tried the remedy, well... I suppose nature is better than swallowing some pills from the doctor eh, chew the leaves (super bitter), swallowed it and after 3 hours I'm still okay, so guess it's not poisonous. Between 12noon to 3.30 pm, I took my lunch, finished my 1/2 cup of ginger tea, ate 3 "paus" and still feel hungry. I think the leaves must be at work!!

Lessons of life

I received below story from a friend and I have forwarded them to many of my friends, I think my blogger friends should read this piece of beautiful story, a sad one but worth reading it over and over again so that the story speaks deeply in us lest we take our loved ones for granted.

Just two years after our marriage, hubby brought up the idea of asking Mother to move from the rural hometown and spend her remaining years with us. Hubby's father passed away while he was still very young. Mother endured much hardship and struggled all on her own to provide for him, see him through to a university degree. You could say that she suffered a great deal and did everything you could expect of a woman to bring hubby to where he is today. I immediately agreed and started packing
the spare room, which has a balcony facing the South to let her enjoy the sunshine and plant greenery. Hubby stood in the bright room, and suddenly just picked me up and started spinning round and round. As I begged him to put me down, he said: "Lets go fetch mother." Hubby is tall and big sized and I love to test on his chest and enjoy the feeling that he could pick me up at any moment put the tiny me into his
pockets. Whenever we have an argument and both refuses to back down, he would pick me up and spin me over his head continuously until I surrender and beg for mercy. I became addicted to this kind of panic-joy feeling.
Mother brought along her countryside habits and lifestyle with her. For example; I am so used to buying flowers to decorate the living room, she could not stand it and would comment: "I do not know how you young people spend your money, why do you buy flowers for? You also can't eat flowers!" I smiled and said: "Mum, with flowers in the house, our mood will also become better." Mother continues to grumble away, and hubby smiled: "Mum, this is a city-people's habit; slowly you will get use to it."
Mother stopped saying anything. But every time thereafter, whenever came home with flowers, she would ask me how much it costs. I told her and she would shake her head and express displeasure. Sometimes, when I come home with lots of shopping bags, she would ask each and every item how much they cost, I would tell her honestly and she would get even more upset about it. Hubby playfully pinched my nose and said: "You little fool, just don't tell her the full price of everything would solve it."

There begins the friction to our otherwise happy lifestyle. Mother hates it most when hubby wakes up early to prepare the breakfast. In your view, how could the man of the house cook for the wife? At the breakfast table, mother facial expression is always like the dark clouds before a thunderstorm and I would pretend not to notice. She would use her chopsticks and make a lot of noise with it as her silent protest.
As I am a dance teacher in the Children's Palace and am exhausted from a long day of dancing around, I do not wish to give up the luxury of that additional few minutes in the comfort of my bed and hence I turned a deaf ear to all the protest mother makes. From time to time, mother would help out with some housework, but soon her help created additional work for me. For example: she would keep all kinds of plastic bags accumulating them so that she sell them later on, and resulted in our
house being filled with all the trash bags; she would scrimp on dish washing detergent when helping to wash the dishes and so as not to hurt her feelings, I would quietly wash them again.
One day, late at night, mother saw me quietly washing the dishes, and "Bam" she slams her bedroom door and cried very loudly in her room. Hubby was placed in a difficult position, and after that, he did not speak to me for that entire night. I pretended to be a spoilt child, tried acting cute, but he totally ignored me.... I got mad and asked him: "What did I do wrong?" Hubby stared at me and said: "Can't you just give in to her once? We couldn't possibly die eating from a bowl
unclean it is, right?" After that incident, for a long period of time, mother did not speak to me and you can feel that there is a very awkward feeling hanging in the house. During that period of cold war, hubby was caught in dilemma as to who to please.

In order to stop her son from having to prepare breakfast, mother took on the "all important" task of preparing breakfast without any prompting. At the breakfast table, mother would look at hubby happily eating his breakfast and cast that reprimanding stare at me for having failed to perform my duty as a wife. To avoid the embarrassing breakfast situation, I resorted to buying my own breakfast on my way to work. That night, while in bed, hubby was a little upset and asked me: "LD, is it because you think that mum's cooking is not clean that's why you chose not
to eat at home?" He then turned his back on me and left me alone in tears as feeling of unfairness overwhelmed me. After some time, hubby sighed:
"LD, just for me, can you have breakfast at home?" I am left with no choice but to return to the breakfast table. The next morning, I was having porridge prepared by mother and I felt a sudden churn in my stomach and everything inside seem to be rushing up my throat. I tried to suppress the urge to throw up but I could not. I threw down the bowl, rushed into the washroom, and vomited everything out. Just
as I was catching my breath, I saw mother crying and grumbling very loudly in her dialect, hubby was standing at the washroom doorway staring at me with fire burning in his eyes.. I opened my mouth but no words came out of it, I really did not mean it.
We had our very first big fight that day; mother took a look at us, then stood up and slowly made her way out of the house. Hubby gave me a final stare in the eye and followed mother down the stairs. For three days, hubby did not return home, not even a phone call. I was so furious, since mother arrived; I had been trying my best and putting up with her, what else do you want me to do? For no reason, I keep having the feeling to throw up and I simply have not appetite for food, coupled with all the events happening at home, I was at then low point in my life. Finally, a colleague said: "LD, you look terrible; you should go and see a doctor." The doctor confirmed that I am pregnant.
Now it became clear to me why I threw up that fateful morning, a sense of sadness floated through that otherwise happy news. Why didn't hubby, and mother who had been through this before, thought of the possibility of this being the reason that day? At the hospital entrance, I saw my hubby standing there. It had only been three days, but he looked haggard. I had wanted to turn and leave, but one look at him and my heart soften, I couldn't resist and called out to him. He followed my voice and finally found me but he pretended that he doesn't know me; he has that disgusted look in his eyes that cut right through my heart. I told myself not to look at him anymore, and hail a cab. At that moment, I have such a strong urge inside me to shout to my hubby: "Darling, I am having your baby!" and have him lift me up and spin me around in circles of joy. What I wanted didn't happen and as I sat in the cab, my tears started rolling down. Why? Why our love couldn't even withstand the test of one fight?
Back home, I lay on the bed thinking about my hubby, and the disgusted look in his eyes. I cried and wet the corner of the blanket. That night, sound of the drawers opening woke me up. I switched on the lights and I saw hubby with tears rolling down his face. He was removing the money. I stared at him in silence; he ignored me, took the bank deposit book and some money and left the house. Maybe he really intends to leave me for good. What a rational man, so clear-cut in love and money matters. I gave a few dried laugh and tears starting streaming down again. The next day, I
did not go to work. I wanted to clear this out and have a good talk with hubby. I reached his office and his secretary gave me a weird look and said: "Mr. Tan's mother had a traffic accident and is now in the hospital".
I stood there in shock. I rushed to the hospital and by the time I found hubby, mother had already passed away. Hubby did not look at me, his face was expressionless. I looked at mother's pale white and thin face and I couldn't control the tears in my eyes. My god, how could this happen? Throughout the funeral, hubby did not say a single word to me, with only the occasional disgusted stare at me. I only managed to find out brief facts about the accident from other people. That day, after mother left the house, she walked in dazed toward the bus stop ,
apparently intending to go back to her old house back in the countryside. As hubby ran after her, she tried to walk faster and as she tried to cross the street, a public bus came and hit her...I finally understood how much hubby must hate me, if I had not thrown up that morning, if we had not quarreled, if....In his heart, I am indirectly the killer of his mother.
Hubby moved into mother's room and came home every night with a strong liquor smell on him. And me, I am buried under the guilt and self-pity and could hardly breathe. I wanted to explain to him, tell him that we are going to have our baby soon, but each time, I saw the dead look in his eyes, all the words I have at the brink of my mouth just fell back in. I had rather he hit me real hard or give me a big and thorough scolding though none of these events happening had been my fault at all.
Many days of suffocating silence went by and as the days went by, hubby came home later and later. The deadlock between us continues, we were living together like strangers who don't know each other. I am like the dead knot in his heart.
One day, I passed by a western restaurant, looking into the glass window,
I saw hubby and a girl sitting facing each other and he very lightly brushed her hair for her, I understood what it meant. After recovering from that moment of shock, I entered the restaurant, stood in front of my hubby and stared hard at him, not a tear in my eyes. I have nothing to say to him, and there is no need to say anything. The girl looked at me, looks at hubby, stands up and wanted to go, hubby stretched out his hand and stopped her. He stared back at me,challenging me. I can only hear my slow heart beat, beating, one by one as if at the brink of death. I eventually backed down, if I had stood that any longer, I will collapse together with the baby inside me. That night, he did not come home; he had chosen to use that as a way to indicate to me: Following mother's death so did our love for each other.
He did not come home anymore after that. Sometimes, when I returned home from work, I can tell that the cupboard had been touched - he had returned to take some of his stuff. I no longer wish to call him; the initial desire to explain everything to him vanished. I lived alone; I go for my medical checkups alone, my heart breaks again and again every time I see a guy carefully helping his wife through the physical examination. My office colleagues hinted to me to consider aborting the baby, I told them No, I will not.. I insisted on having to this baby, perhaps it is my way of
repaying mother for causing her death. One day, I came home and I saw hubby sitting in the living room. The whole house was filled with cigarette smoke. On the coffee table, there was this piece of paper. I know what it is all about without even looking at it. In the two months plus of living alone, I have gradually learned to find peace within myself. I looked at him, removed my hat and said: "You wait a while, I will sign." He looked at me, mixed feelings in his eyes, just like mine.
As I hang up my coat, I keep repeating to myself "You cannot cry, you cannot cry..." my eyes hurt terribly, but I refused to let tears come out from there. After I hung up my coat, hubby's eyes stared fixed at my bulging tummy. I smiled, walked over to the coffee table and pulled the paper towards me. Without even looking at what it says, I signed my name on it and pushed the paper to him. "LD, are you pregnant?" Since mother's accident, this is the first time he spoke to me. I could not
control my tears any further and they fell like raindrops. I said: "Yes, but its ok, you can leave now." He did not go, in the dark, we sat, facing each other. Hubby slowly moved over me, his tears wet the blanket. In my heart, everything seems so far away, so far that even if I sprint, I could never reach them. I cannot remember how many times he repeated "sorry" to me. I had originally thought that I would forgive him, but now I can't. In the western restaurant, in front of that girl, that cold look in his eyes, I will never forget, ever. We have drawn such deep scars in each other's heart. For me, it's unintentional; for
him, totally intentional. I had been waiting for this moment of reconciliation, but I realized now, what had gone past is gone forever and could not repeated.
Other than the thought of the baby inside me that would bring some warmth to my heart, I am totally cold towards him, I no longer eat anything he buys for me, I don't take any presents from him and I stopped talking to him. From the moment I signed on that piece of paper, marriage and love had vanished from my heart. Sometimes, hubby will try to come into the bedroom, but when he walks in, I will walk out to the living room. He had no choice but to sleep in mother's room. At night, from his room, I can hear light sounds of groaning, I kept quiet. This used to be his trick; last time, whenever I ignore him, he would fake illness and I will
surrender and find out what is wrong with him, he would then grab me and laugh. He has forgotten that last time I cared for him and am concerned because there was love, but now, what is there between us? Hubby's groaning came on and off continuing but I continuously ignored him.
Almost everyday, he would buy something for the baby, infant products, children products and books that kids like to read. Bags and bags of it stacked inside his room till it is full. I know he is trying to use this to reach out to me, but I am no longer moved by his actions. He has no choice but to lock himself in his room and I can hear his typing away on his computer keyboard, maybe he is now addicted to web surfing but none of that matters to me anymore. It was sometime towards the end of spring in the following year, one late night, I screamed because of a sudden stomach pain, hubby came rushing into the room, its like he did not change and sleep, and had been waiting for this moment. He carried me and ran down the stairs, stopped a car, holding my hand very tightly and kept wiping the sweat off my brow, throughout the journey to the hospital. Once we reached the hospital, he carried me and hurried into the delivery suite. Lying on the back of his skinny but warmth body, a thought crossed my mind: In my lifetime, who else would love me as much as he did?
He held the delivery suite door opened and watch me go in; his warm eyes caused me to manage a smile at him despite my contraction pain. Coming out of the delivery room, hubby looked at our son and me, eyes tear with joy and he kept smiling. I reached out and touched his hand. Hubby looked at me, smiling and then he slowly collapsed onto the floor. I cried out for him in pain... He smiled, but without opening that tired eyes of his... I had thought that I would never shed any tear for him, but the truth is, I have never felt a deeper pain cutting through my body at
that moment. Doctor said that by the time hubby discovered he had liver cancer, it was already in terminal stage and it was a miracle that he managed to last this long. I asked the doctor when he first discovered he had cancer. Doctor said about 5 months ago and consoled me and saying: "Prepare for his funeral."
I disregarded the nurse's objection and rushed home, I went into his room and checked his computer, and a suffocating pain hitsme. Hubby's cancer was discovered 5 months ago, his groaning was real, and I had thought that... the computer showed over 200 thousand words he wrote for our son:
"Son, just for you, I have persisted, to be able to take a look at you before I fall, is my biggest wish now... I know that in your life, you will have many happiness and maybe some setbacks, if only I can accompany you throughout that journey, how nice would it be. But daddy now no longer has that chance. Daddy has written inside here all the possible difficulties and problems you may encounter during your lifetime, when you meet with these problems, you can refer to daddy's suggestion....
Son, after writing these 200 thousand words, I feel as if I have accompanied you through life journey. To be honest, daddy is very happy. Do love your mother, she has suffered, she is the one who loves you most and also the one who loves me most..." From play school to primary school,to secondary, university, to work and even in dealing with questions of love, everything big and small was written there.
Hubby has also written a letter for me:
"My dear, to marry you is my biggest happiness, forgive me for the pain I have caused you, forgive me for not telling you my illness, because I want to see you be in a joyful mood waiting for the arrival of our baby...My dear, if you cried, it means that you have forgiven me and I would smile, thank you for loving me...These presents, I'm afraid I cannot give them to our son personally, could you help me to give some of them to him every year, the dates on what to give when are all written on the packaging... "

Going back to the hospital, hubby is still in coma. I brought our son over and place him beside him. I said: "Open your eyes and smile, I want our son to remember being in the warmth of your arms..." He struggled to open his eyes and managed a weak smile. Our son still in his arms was happily waving his tiny hands in the air. I press the button on the camera and the sound of the shutter rang through the air as tears slowly rolled down my face.... A fatal misunderstanding and the person who loves me the most in this world is gone forever..."Cruel misunderstandings one after another disrupted the blissful footsteps to our family. Our originals intend of
having Mother enjoy some quiet and peaceful moments in her remaining years with us went terribly wrong as destiny's secret is finally revealed at a price, every thing became too late."........
This is a true story.
LEARNING POINT - DO NOT EVER HOLD ON TO OFFENCES!!!
I am totally speechless, this story brought tears to my eyes as I read through each line eager to know what would happen next. It truly showed the devastating power of grudges and anger! Simple humility and communication would have resolved most of the problems in that story, as well as patience.... This story has really touched my heart and life as a whole and it has stimulated a paradigm shift. Though it is very sad, it is also very refreshing to know that from today, I can consciously start to
live a life free of grudge. People please let's live a life devoid of grudge. Communication is key.

Take greatest care and live on.

Now, sorry to make you all cry, who would not cry reading above story... so do take care and remember do not hold grudges, settle them immediately and directly and of course with tons of patience and love ya!

Occasionally Enterprising...

One of the subject I’ll be teaching this semester is Enterprising Management and one of the exercise that I plan to do with my students is the GET test (General Enterprise Tendency test). The test was initially developed by staff at Durham University Business School and over the years has been revised. The tool was meant to test if one has the entrepreneurial personality, in other words to see if you have what it takes to be an entrepreneur (one who has an innovative idea and able to commercialize it to create wealth). It’s an objective based questionnaire, 54 questions in all, quite simple and you just got to tick your stand on the statements whether you tend to agree or disagree…
Well, this is what I score and the interpretation of the “entrepreneur likelihood” in me. :)

“Occasionally enterprising”
You are likely to have strengths in some of the enterprising characteristics and may be enterprising in some contexts. At this time you probably are unlikely to set up an innovative growth-oriented global business, and may be able to express your enterprise either within employment as an intrapreneur, or in your leisure time through voluntary community projects.

You probably wish to consider tried and tested enterprising ideas that fit in with your lifestyle.

You may be happy to work as an intrapraneur as a valuable member of an organisational team. If you start your own enterprise, you may need to cultivate stronger independent leadership qualities. Starting a business is not the only option for you. You would be probably equally happy to work as an employee as part of an organisational team or on your own projects.

You would probably look to others for entrepreneurial ideas but are probably content with proven, traditional approaches to business or enterprise.

You are not happy about taking on any risk and perhaps you have too many responsibilities or too few personal resources to allow you to feel comfortable about taking financial or business risks.

You scored highly in having an internal locus of control. This means that you may have the following qualities:
• Opportunistic, seeking and taking advantage of opportunities;
• Self-confidence with the belief that you have control over your destiny and you make your own luck (I trust in God’s plan for me), rather than being controlled by fate;
• Proactive, taking personal responsibility to navigate problems that arise to achieve success on your terms;
• Determination and express a strong willed control over life;
• Self belief, equating the results achieved with the effort you make.
Having an internal locus of control means that you confidently seek to exert control over your life, drawing on your inner resources rather than depending on others. You strongly believe that your personal qualities and efforts will determine your success in life. (I’m just a simple woman delighted by the simple things around me!!)

Thinking of running your own business, you may want to try this test out at
http://get2test.net/test/index.htm before deciding on your next move...anyway it's just a test, should not be an ultimate tool to influence your decision.
