Upclose with Amber Chia

Last Saturday after dinner, we hang around at Q'bay mall and happened to meet Amber Chia, our own breed of supermodel in person. She was there for a model search cum Charity event cum opening ceremony of an eatery there. We took the opportunity to snap a photo with her, aren't she glamorous? I commented that she looked wonderful, she shook my hands and said thank you. Oh yeah she also gave my ex-neighbor's son a peck on his cheek. How sweet eh...

The right words at the right time..

It's the kindy practice that whenever there's a spelling, ejaan or "ting sieh" session, the child need to obtain the parents' signature of acknowledgement as an evidence that parents are aware of their child's progress in those tested area. Below was the conversation between Emily and I one evening concerning the subject matter.

Emily: Mommy need your signature... I did not get all right for my "ting sieh"
Me: Hmm....checking and putting my signature on the page (actually no big deal, I remembered she got 4 out of 5 correct).
Emily: (Quickly keep the book and took out another, the spelling book this time). Nah you can look at this as long as you want and you'll be happy, forget how I fare for my "ting sieh".
Me: (Puzzled, I wonder whose side of genes that she got this from)

One evening, when Emily and hubby were spending some time outside the house they bumped with our neighbor Mrs.XX.

Mrs.XX: Hi Emily!
Emily: Hi Mrs. XX
Mrs.XX: Nice staying at your new house?
Emily: Yes...
Mrs.XX: Which one is better? Your old or new place?
Emily: Certainly the new place.
Mrs.XX: Why?
Emily: Because over here I can get to see you.
Mrs.XX: (The heart must have been melted by her words)

You see, my girl really knows how to position herself and makes the most out of the situation. I shall not fear for her surviving skills, as the song goes "She will survive".

As for Michelle she's the straight forward type, no twist and turn, very predictable. Both of them make a good blend.

Nostalgia

Just the other day hubby and I were talking about good old times.. I told him what we have in Kampar 3o over years ago and decided to blog about it.

Nostalgia 1: The lady who sold "tau fu fa" (Tauhua in cantonese)
There was this chinese lady, probably in her late 40s or younger but I can still remember she probably look older than her age due to hard labour earning ends meet (I can still pictured her - lines on her forehead with dark complexion). She has a powerful and high pitch voice and balanced two big wooden drums on a wooden pole (like the scene in the old kungfu movies where people used to do that when they need to fetch water from the river.. hope you can imagine that). She will shout "Tau fu fa, tau fu fa", often times my mom will ask us to go out, stopped her and ordered a few bowls of the sweet and smooth desert. In one of the drum holds an inner metal drum which consist of the "tauhua" and in the other drum holds bowls, utensils and some water. She used to ask us for some water for cleaning as she could not possibly carry all the water she needs. Mind you she only walked and I don't think we could imagine the hard labour she has to go through for the sake of making a decent living.

Nostalgia 2: The old man who provide sharpening services
Now there was this particular old chinese man, almost toothless and once a while he will popped at our main gate and shouted "anything to sharpen? Knives or scissors". Mom will always ask us to open the gate, invite the old man in and digged whatever scissors and knives that we have at home. He will then sit on the floor, took out his sharpener and began sharpening each tools, he will then cleaned them and returned the tools to us well sharpened and sparkling clean. Mom always rewarded him more than he asked, he used to return to us the extra but mom insisted he keeps it. So for a few years whenever he is in town (I guess), he never fails to appear at our main gate, there were times the interval was so long, we thought and asked if he's still alive. When he did appeared at our door step we were so happy to see him and opened the gate for him, took out a pair of scissors (sometimes need no sharpening) and just see his hands working. Somehow I understood that mom don't want him to feel bad feeling old (useless) and merely passed him some notes though we could see man of his age really should be resting at home. But then he may not have a home. I cannot remember when he stopped coming but we guessed he must have moved on... hopefully I'll get to meet him in heaven someday.

Nostalgia 3: The roti man
The roti man, a skinny indian man always with a "cerut" in his mouth and occasionally chewing "sirih". He is more advanced compared to the tauhua lady and old "sharpener" man as he owned a bicycle fixed with a big blue wooden box on it. Whenever he is approaching (about 8.00pm) he will ring his bell and we could hear him almost half a mile away. I will run out, wait for him in front of my house and ordered the famous "roti planta" (bread with planta) or "roti kelapa" (coconut bun). Sometimes mom will ask me to help the roti man pushed his bicycle up the slope and together we will count "satu, dua, tiga" and with all my might pushed the bicycle up together with him. He will then sell his bread to the neighbouring area and by 9.30pm or so we can always hear him charging down the slope, making the all too familiar bumping sound as he crossed the metal drain's cover right in front of our house. There are times if we missed him on his way up, we will normally on standby mode to stop him on his way down. Just the other day while at the traffic light I saw this familiar scene, another roti man, also with a blue wooden box but now on a motorbike.

Time has indeed changed the way things were... now our neighboring tauhua man drives a van, there's no more manual sharpening services and our roti man is on a motorbike. As I recalled the good old times, it makes me feel like a little girl all over again.

Lessons from the garden

As I tender my garden, it opened up my eyes to lessons of life. Some blossoming plants are here for the day and gone tomorrow, it teaches me that life is fragile, we could have it today and lose it tomorrow, so we ought to live life to the fullest. Some plants failed to yield until you decided to give it a shock by trimming it completely bald, it may seems that you are doing harm than good until you realized that it thrives into a healthy plant. In certain life circumstances, we need to take risk and who knows the best is waiting for us out there.

Certain plants may look nice from the outside but as time goes by, you realized it is not growing comparing to the rest, I decided to uproot it and then I realized it was infected by hidden insects and the roots were rotten. Sometimes our life reach a stagnant point, there’s no growing, all we need is to do self-reflection and see if we are infected by urgent/unimportant things/sins in life, we will find new meaning of life once the stronghold has been identified and removed.

There was an occasion where the mother plant is withering and dying but as I looked deep underneath the soil, a new life has begun in the form of a little tiny child plant. Sometimes the old has to go to make way for the new, unless we died to our old-self , the new will not emerge.

I’m sure a lot of gardeners experienced this, the plant was clogged up with many unfriendly and sometimes deadly weeds…. We need to be mindful of the quiet weeds that may be growing in our life, failure to do that may choke us in the end.

Some plants just don’t need that extra watering, in fact most plants will die of over watered rather than under watered. That taught me that we should be careful of what we are indulging ourselves in or pampering our child with, what we thought were good actually works the other way round.

It’s amazing how much one can learned out of each situation, only if we care to think about it, so I hope the next time you worked on your garden, spend time in your hobby or merely doing those routine task… reflect on life lessons you can learned out of it. Have a great weekend ahead 

God is good..all the time

An update of what we've been doing over previous long weekend, on Friday I went out with a very dear friend for a movie cum catch up drink, thanks to hubby for taking care of the kids, on Saturday morning we went to our favourite beach at Sg. Batu to hang out and enjoy the nature, we decorated the sandy beach, took a stroll, collected some sea shells and took some pictures. Came evening I started on my long overdue "artwork" project where I decorated a wood piece to be hung in our garden, on the wood piece was written "God Bless Our Garden".
Well, indeed God has blessed our garden, above are some snapshots of our latest collection, from blossoms to vegetables and the last picture on bottom right went straight to our stomach (Japanese tauhu with home grown long beans). God is good..all the time.

How to make....

I was surfing the internet yesterday for some games/craft ideas to be presented in an upcoming Sunday School meeting. I was actually looking for tips on how to prepare a cardboard maze and thought of googling it. At the mean time, Michelle was seated next to me, so while I was typing the keywords to google.. Michelle was distracted and was looking on what I was typing.... I typed in the following words "how to make..." and to my surprise (google actually displayed some of the most searched phrased that match my search) "how to make love... XXXXXXX results" appeared on the screen to which Michelle says aloud ... "ha ha mummy it says how to make love".... immediately I typed something else and terminate the scene automatically... Gosh don't want to be caught in the situation where she asked me the details.... just imagine your eight-year old asking you "mummy what is making love?" LOL
