Hi Jo, according to my Phil colleagues, the media magnify the issue, terrorism gang is situated in the southern island (Mindanao), even there, it's safe to travel and the roads are developed, of course don't go to the jungle.. Luzon (where Manila is) and Visayas is quite safe... to be on the safe side, still we have to be escorted by reliable locals. Philippinos are extremely courteous people especially to foreigners.
