Gifts Idea

It’s the end of the year, most of us will be busy wrapping up 2011, slow down and clearing our leaves. It’s also time to do a bit/serious reflection (depending on your situation) and also making little plans to move on. It’s also the time of the year where we will see the increase rate of wedding dinners, annual dinners, end of the year parties etc… especially with 11.11.2011 just 3 days away I believe wedding bells will be sound at every corner.
I have an upcoming wedding dinner in 2 weeks time, instead of the traditional “Ang Pow” for the couple, I will be giving the couple this:

Mr. & Mrs. Moo, the inseparable couple.

Mr. Mrs. Moo will be an ideal gift for the perfect couple. The pair can serve as a decorative item in the new couple’s bedroom and doubled as a pillow, a sweet pillow to lay down their heads after the hustle and bustle of the wedding preparation. Well the wedding is but a ceremony to mark the starting point of the journey of marriage, Mr. & Mrs. Moo can serve as a reminder that it takes two to make a marriage works, I mean real hard labour of love. I am a strong advocate that we need to personalize the gifts to our loved ones, to compliment the gift, a personal hand written message taken from 1 Corinthian 13:4-8 will be bundled with the gift, put the message into a red packet! Voila the perfect gift is ready for the happy couple! I wish I could be married again (to the same man of course!).

Oh yeah….. almost forgotten… if you are interested, please contact Ms. Joanne for a special discount at the following:

WE WANT SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS IN ENGLISH!

“PPSMI issue closed!” This is the headline in most of our dailies today. As a parent and a lecturer I am truly saddened by the outcome but I believe the final outcome is yet final, after seeing what happen in the middle east, I am confident that the people power will speak for itself, if not now, very soon.
I have two daughters that will be affected by this decision and many millions of “Anak Malaysia” will be affected. The very first instinct as a mother is to stand up and do something. As an academician myself I believe I can do something for my children, I can give extra classes to them, converse with them in English, buy them English materials and equip them to my best ability. To the more financially sound group they can send their children to International School and eventually overseas…..……….but to many million parents out there, they are simply helpless.
Whether those who are in support of PPSMI is of the minority group or not, this simple philosophy of using English to teach both Mathematics and Science should not be debated in the very first place and I find it quite ironic that we parents have to put up so much fact and come up with petitions in order to plead our policy makers/education ministry to please give us an option, yes an option ONLY…. I find this quite pathetic.
The new schooling year is less than 2 months away, yet no concrete information is being shared with the parents. I just heard from a friend who is teaching in a SJKC that for primary school students, Science and Mathematics will only be taught in Chinese for those who are going into Standard 4 (my elder daughter’s group). Can one imagine our education system (Standard 1-3, bilingual, Standard 4-6, Chinese, Secondary 1 – 5, Bahasa and in English thereafter). Yesterday I made a trip to a local bookstore, I could hardly find Science and Mathematics books (for year 4) in bilingual and worst still no more Science and Mathematics in English for Standard 1-3 at all.
Well, if we have to fight, we have to fight… for our children and for our nation. This battle is not against individuals but unseen forces that are at work. Never have I seen such a unity among strangers , strangers who fight for a common cause, the battle is not over but in fact it is just the beginning. No one can ever doubt the extend and influence of people power of a nation. Fellow Malaysians, it is time we wake up from our slumber , be concern of what’s happening, clear our eyes and ears and ACT in whatever capacity we could.

Our 1st Overnight Camping Trip

Last weekend, together with 2 other families we went for our first overnight camping trip. The husbands were responsible on the camp site (somewhere in Gertak Sanggul) while the wives prepared food (barbeque chicken, maggi instant noodle, fried eggs, baked beans, bread, salad, snacks.....) and were put in-charge of miscellaneous arrangement. So literally we built tents, barbequed our dinner, had can food for breakfast and overnight by the beach and yeah we nearly moved half of our house over, we were quite surprised as we were well equipped with portable stove, pans, toilet rolls, mosquito repellent, “weapons” (just in case we have bad company), dish washer detergent, tiffin carriers………….. the list goes on. It was a good experience for the girls and they loved every bit of it except for the sleeping part where they have to sleep on the hard surface with no bolsters and soft toys accompanying them, but they were just too tired to complain and knocked down in less than 5 minutes. As predicted, hubby and I could hardly sleep that night (we miss our comfortable king size bed) and we re-charged by having longggg……… naps the following day (sign of aging). I encouraged those who have yet to try this out, please give it a try while your body still can take it (ha ha) and by the way, tents are easily obtained from hypermarkets and even my nine year old can put it up quite easily (can't believe it, right?). So now that we have tried camping, I wonder what's next?

Emily's short story

The girls have been reading a lot of comics recently and Emily being the creative one likes to create her own. Yesterday night while I was sorting things out on the study table, I stumbled one of her stories (with drawings). The short story sounds like this:

Once upon a time there was a poor girl....

One day she met with a fairy....
The fairy said " I will teach you how to cook so that you can can marry some day"

So the girl learned cooking from the fairy..

One day she met with a guy and they got married and live happily ever after.

Ha ha ha, isn't she cute? I don't know why she associated ability to cook with getting married, maybe she sees MIL and I always busy in the kitchen and how hubby is facinated and pleased with our cooking that she actually relates to that. What a cutie.

I indeed had a terrific SAHM time, now I’m back to work and equally happy and fulfilled. God is good… all the time.

More patience and love

For the past few weeks, I’m finding difficulty in handling Emily. Recently she has been super bossy, wanted to have just her own way, got angry over the slightest things, her words are always correct, she’s rude.... to summarize this.. SHE WANTS HER OWN WAY!! which is totally unacceptable and ridiculous. The fact that Michelle is basically easier to handle really magnified the contrast. I know I’m comparing both of them which is not good, each children is unique and special in their own ways. So what do you expect this mummy to do?

In my prayers I always ask God to give me patience and love to teach my children.. I guess I got the answer from Him, what better way to learn patience and love other than putting me in situations that I can really exercise patience and love.

But I must learn from hubby, whenever I’m out of patience, love and ideas, I passed the baton to him and he always has that final touch to deal with her.

I’m not sure about the other mothers, have you ever cried with your children? Just the other night I was so frustrated, I broke down and told them that I love them, I wanted to teach them, whenever they misbehave I’m very sad, sometimes I don’t know how to teach them but we will pray for God to help us… three of us ended up hugging and cried our heart out. But it was a good session.

After the whole episode, they slept and I went back to my room. Hubby asked what happened and he heard Emily was crying out loud, I told them the three of us cried altogether… Hubby commented “Ha she’s just five now, you are already crying teaching her, what will happen to you when she’s in her teens?” Ha… I really don’t know… guess I’ll ask a whole lot more patience and love from God then.

Our Saturdays..

Last Sat, I plan for an impromptu trip to the nearby beach with my girls, this time very odd because without the daddy. You must be wondering why eh.. because daddy went for training with uncle Richard to prepare themselves for the charity ride the next day.

Early in the morning after the usual errands, I woke the kids from their slumber, rushed them to finish their milk, packed a bag of stuff (some snacks, tools for sand castle building, water, a change of clothes) and off we go.

Since the entrance to the beach are without any proper tar road, I decided to drive daddy’s super road bully (the Prado), was drizzling on the way, I asked the kids to pray and when we reached God stopped the rain and we began our fun time.

Chose the perfect spot, spread the mat and we start building whatever that comes into our mind. Later, hand in hand we went down for a stroll, let the sea water washed our feet, collected memorable from mother nature and decided to make our move.

It’s great spending time with the girls… I’m already planning what to do this coming Sat and again without daddy because he will be away for a seminar….hope daddy is having a super duper time just like we would enjoy our super duper time together.

Think Big!

I’m currently reading a book entitled “Think Big” by Dr.Ben Carson, not into book reading lately except academically based but one sweet church sister (our church librarian) shared that I must read the book, got it delivered to me personally, I was touched and in order to show my appreciation to her I got to read the book which is due on 20th Sept.

This is an autobiography of the author blended with elements of parenting, keys to success, trusting God, miracles, real-life struggles and triumph. Two-third into it, am going to finish it by end of the week.

One of the section that caught my attention is how his mother (a single parent, black and uneducated woman) encouraged Ben from the last among his class to an outstanding student through faith in God. This is what her mom told him and his brother every time they need a booster from life’s trial..

“If others can do it, you can to do it too except that you will learn to do it better”

Well, hubby is suggesting that it’s high time Michelle learn how to cycle (just with 2 wheels on). However we have one little problem, you see, Michelle has always been more intellectual (good memory with above average academic performance) rather than the sporty type (clumsy like the mummy with below average motor skills), also she’s the “kiasi” type.

First session was… well… second session was…. hmm…some improvement (at least she knows how to prevent herself from falling by using her leg), third session still unable to place the other foot on the pedal… you see she got a little bit discourage… then I remembered what Ben’s mother said and I said the same thing “you see, others can do it, you can do it too and mummy believe you can cycle one day”. I’m not sure if it was those words, the next day, she is eager to cycle and this time she managed to get her the both feet on the pedal but still unable to balance herself. I would consider a major improvement.

Thinking that our condo corridor might not be a good place to practice, I brought her down to the common area/”outdoor hall” near the pool area so that with the ample space she’s free to cycle and the probability of hitting the wall or columns would be lower.

I took a brisk walk along the perimeter of the space, Emily strolled (or stormed) with her scooter and Michelle was free to roam. To my surprise just after 10 minutes or so Michelle managed to balance herself and not long beginning to cycle from one end to the other end of the open hall! Wow what an accomplishment and I can see the joy in her face and Emily’s too. She fell from the bicycle but got up and cycled again.

Last Saturday we went to the hall again, this time she could balance and even make a U turn. I’m astonished by how she progressed, my clumsy girl has finally learned to cycle (in less than a week). That’s the power of positive reinforcement

Lil Isaac, a blessing and channel of worship

How can a bedridden boy who don't even know how to exercise his own body muscle be a channel of worship and glorified our Lord. Little Isaac is hospitalised for uncontrolled fits again and being a parent it is very heartbreaking to see a child lying on the bed and being helpless about it. We could hardly understand how the parents feel BUT I know for sure how Isaac in his condition right now serve to be an instrument of worship that glorifies our Lord.

His life taught us that men has limits, God is all powerful and able,
His life taught us the power of prayer, the power of unity through prayer,
His life taught us that life is so precious, God give us life to enjoy things around us,
His life taught us how beautiful each of us are wonderfully made,
His life taught us about patience, dependence and unconditional love,
His life taught us to be humble, thankful and hopeful,
His life taught us about things we could not have learnt in any other way,
His life is truly a channel of worship that glorifies our Lord.
So lil Isaac, I believe you are in good hands, the battle belongs to our Lord.

I'm the dentist, so is MIL!

Yeap, I played dentist last Sunday. Michelle was complaining that her front tooth is giving her trouble, it swayed left and right and interrupt her daily schedule, she's in pain during her meals and can't seems to stop playing it with her tongue. MIL was the one who manually extracted the other front tooth previously and she complained that MIL was rough and it was painful, blood came oozing out from her gums.. blah blah blah.. I asked if she wanted me to do the job this time, though reluctant at first, she agreed to the proposal.

So here I am, using a piece of slightly wet hanky, I hold her tooth with my thumb and forefinger, secured it and make sure I have a good tight grip of the tooth, shook it a little bit and pull downwards. I got to make sure it is done quick and painless....... A little "grr..ak" sound was heard and soon the job was done.. I found myself holding her front tooth but thank God it's not that bloody... managed to stop the outpour of blood in a minute by pressing the location with the hanky.

And it was such a relieve for her, not for long though and soon she complained that she got a huge big gap in between her teeth.... haiz.... can't wait for the new teeth to appear.. at the mean time she avoids pronoucing anything that starts with a "f".. LOL

Oh ooh........

A friend of mine is pregnant for the fourth time and a bunch of us mothers of three and two were like “ooh and ahh..” over her courage. We congratulated her and at the same time expressed our admiration of her courage to go for four. She’s the second family in our church that has gone this far, most of us stopped at two and three.

After spoken to her, she shared that it took her a few weeks to come to the realization that the baby is real and that she’s having another baby and also to accept the fact that whatever God chooses to do, no man can stopped (no matter what type of family planning methods you are using!)

Ha… so there we were a bunch of mothers of two, sharing our tales on how we dreaded late periods, anticipating yet-to-come menses at the end of every month, fearing of another baby in our late 30s or 40s and discussing the reliability of our current birth-control techniques!

I jokingly suggested that let’s go for our 3rd one, then terminate our ability to conceive once and for all, have peace of mind as it seems that doctors only agreed or recommend to the procedure of tubal ligation (on female) and vasectomy (on male)….. when we have reached 40s with at least 3 kids. At the mean time whatever birth control we are taking is not 100%. On another hand, there’s a voice speaking inside of me and sort of reprimanding me which sounds like this “Tsk tsk tsk, why are you so afraid of receiving God’s blessings, didn’t God says children are a blessing from Him?”

You see, women in 30s are in a dilemma stage when it comes to child bearing, we are not young anymore to bear more children as some of us would gladly testifies how our body changed and “suffered” during those times, at the same time not too old to have one also. Haiz…. At the mean time, let everything be status quo and let the Master decides.

The Fact of Life

I'm sure parents will be asked this question at least once over their lifetime as a parent: "Mummy/Daddy, where do babies come from, how are they made?" LOL, I remember my daughters asked me this some time back, well this is how I explained it:

"One day daddy and mummy love each other so much that we decided to make a baby, well to make a baby, you'll need this. Mummy has an egg and daddy has a worm, one day, daddy's worm swam into mummy's body and met the egg, the worm joined the egg and a baby is formed, mummy fed the baby through the food that mummy takes each day and as the days passed by, the baby grew and one fine day when the baby decided to come out, mummy experienced a big "stomachache" and when mummy pushed hard, out came the baby, so that is how mummy and daddy made both of you"

While explaining this I made some action, of course they giggled and was amazed by the storylah....

On another note... for those who are concerned and eagered to know the updates... I was tested.......................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... negative through a self pregnancy test yesterday. Still no sign of menses, dizzyness has improved slightly, no sigh of nausea but still with a gigantic appetite throughout the day. :D

Short getaway...just Emily and I

Last weekend Emily and I went for a short getaway, yeap just the both of us. After getting blessings from Michelle and daddy, off we went to KL by bus for a 3 days 2 nights trip. It is the first time that I'm travelling with Emily alone and also the first time for Michelle and daddy to spend time alone. It was hubby's idea that maybe we could spend individual time exclusively with the girls periodically so that each of them get our full 100% attention.

Emily behaved very well during the entire trip, we got to spend time with my sis's family and also I made arrangement to hang out with my uni's friends and their children. Michelle and daddy on the other hand also had a superb time exercising outdoor, went shopping and eating out.

So, we strongly recommend parents out there to plan individual time with each of your children, we are blessed to have two girls so that we can divide our time fairly between both of them, if you have more than two, it's a matter of wise planning.

In addition, this trip is suppose to lighten Emily's emotion as she has been having "school phobia" lately, crying almost every morning before going to school... after coming back from KL. As of this morning she still cries.... but in a jovial mood when she reached home... I hope this is coming to an end soon... tried to find the root cause, we suspected it must be one of the teacher that she's scared of..... Anyway I believe it's another phase that she's going through... and we will support her all the way... Emily be strong.. we are praying for you..

Super Duper Mom, Wife....

I once read a parenting book that while a father is the head of the family, mother is the heart of the family, therefore it is very natural that a mother's heart is always for the family especially the needs of our children and spouse.

I remembered when I first got married, I felt bad not being back home on time to cook dinner and when I had my children felt guilty of not spending more time with them, not cooking for them, not being there all the time when they were sick or just recovered from any illness, not caring enough for them....etc.

I'm sure a lot of moms out there do feel the same at certain time of your motherhood, deep inside us we want to be a super wife, a super mom, a super daughter, a super DIL and a super employee. But the fact is often times we cannot be one and the more we attempt to do so, we will end up being more stressed up, feeling inadequate and sometimes a total failure, worst still a total breakdown...

I guess it's part of the process and journey of life as a wife, mother and a woman.
I'm now learning to take things easy (though sometimes it's easier said than done), less critical on myself, expect less , plan less, things need not have to be in super orderly/systematic manner and take things one at a time.....

I believe we need to "pause" and "take five" at least once a day....to start off take a little bit more time in the bathroom.... ha ha ha... I did that at times...

I would encourage mothers to share their struggles in this area.. and by doing so we may encourage each other as we journeyed through....

The many sides of Emily...

My lil old Emily is sure one big "irritator" and who is the victim if not her one and only jeh jeh. Basically everyday I will hear "mummy, jeh-jeh do this to me" or "mummy, emily do this to me"... Hubby keeps on reminding me "Don't die on every mountain... just focused on the main ones" meaning not to be too overly concerned on the little misbehaviour of your child, just come in the picture for the big ones.

Emily always ignored my first instruction, maybe I nagged too much at home quah.. I will have to say twice or more to get my message across... When hubby instructs and stared at her with his big eyes, she will obey immediately. When asked, hubby commented "because I meant what I say, yes means yes, no means no". Somehow I admit using hubby's name to make things easier... "oh daddy is coming back.. oh daddy won't like this... oh daddy..." Hubby commented I'm giving a negative perception of him... okay I'm guilty lor...

On the other hand I realized Emily has great compassion, a good care giver and a heart full of love. She wiped my tears and kissed me on the cheeks whenever I cried over sad movies, she served me with glasses of water and sponge my forehead when I'm down with fever, she lied down with me and keep me accompany when I was unwell. She comforted me with words when I missed her poh poh.. She stroked jeh-jeh's forehead when she had a bad fall and kissed her pointer when I accidentally closed the car door(ouch.. careless mummy...)

Just yesterday I caned her for her wrongdoings...she cried and cried...poor girl but mummy got to discipline you...at the end of such session I always reassured her that I loved her and we end up in each other arms....

Potato art

I went to Giant to get some water containers and pencil leads for Michelle, as I walked along the stationery aisle, I picked up a box of water color and a drawing block, it has been a while since I did art work with the girls and I’m running out of games to play with them. Thanks to mamajo who suggested that I did some pattern stamping using water colors. I remembered doing this decades ago as part of my school art project and can’t believe that after 20 more years I’m here doing it again with my girls this time. I took a potato, cut into half and start carving the pattern that comes to my mind. The girls are so amazed with me, they even praised me for being so wise (ha ha ha, you see it’s not that hard to amuse and amaze your children, all it takes is to dig your skill and expertise that you acquire decades ago!!).

Below were their masterpieces…. The one on top are Emily’s and bottom one, Michelle’s, as expected Michelle’s one is more organized, jeh jeh mah… Emily did a great job too…

Winning & Losing

There is a Chinese proverb that says that winning and losing are part of life’s journey, one should not be too concerned over it and move on. Now how do you teach a four and six year old this concept?

It’s pretty normal for children to feel rather unhappy when they experience losing moment in their life. We adults will feel the same way, what more for children right? Hubby and I believe that we need to teach them to deal with “losing” in the course of their life. Emily being more emotional and sensitive finding it harder to accept such moment compared to Michelle who is more matured in her thinking.

Recently due to the Olympics fever, we frequently group together in front of our TV set following the progress of the events on air. We take this time to teach them the lesson of winning and losing. We stressed that it’s part of the game that one will win and the other lose, when we win we should not be too proud over it, when we lose we should not be too concerned over it also… and to my kids losing means crying...

We stressed that if one lose one should try again…. Games are meant to be fun and we should learn to enjoy the process not so much on the outcome…. So far the girls are taking this positively and I can see improvement on Emily’s part even though it’s still hard for her not to cry when she loses in games. She asked me why the players in the TV cried after winning. I told her it’s the tears of joy, the player is too happy...I think she’s quite confused… anyway I do hope they catch what we are trying to teach them… Aiyo,it’s certainly not easy to bring up children nowadays…

3 Paintbrush of parenting

I managed to steal some time and did some reading last week, I'm reading a parenting book by Dr.William Slonecker, halfway through I find the book quite interesting with a lot of practical insights in parenting, most importantly, it's based on biblical principles in which hubby and I agreed there could be no other better way than our God's way when it comes to bringing up and nurturing our precious gems.

The writer shared 3 must have paint brushes of parenting which are love, authority and trust, what I like about the book is there are no heavy stuff, more on principles and a lot of life experiences from the writer who serve as a pediatrician cum family counsellor for more than 40 years. It's not written for American parents, in fact I could relate the principles and his examples in our Asian family context. Therefore I strongly recommend this book to parents who are open to parenting principles based on a biblical point of view.

Happy reading, God knows how a daunting task it is being parents. :D

Reading "pleasure"

I'm planning to read more and before me I've already lined up books hoping to deligently read them. Yesterday evening while Emily is still napping, I took out my book, found a nice spot, rested my feet on the foot stool and started reading.... while still at the same page, Michelle came running and started to barge into my comfort zone. I pleaded with her to let me read for half an hour and we could play badminton thereafter. She agreed and decided to take a book and sat beside me.

She started reading aloud, by then I was quite annoyed and could not concentrate..then she started to ask me every single word that she's not familiar with...... you guess... yeah I gave up, I end up listening to her reading and correcting her pronunciation..... by the time she finished with her reading, Emily woke up and it's time for the promised badminton session......

I actually envy mothers who find time to read.... I guessed I have to resort reading in the toilet while doing my daily business... but then again do you think they will leave me alone, No! They won't leave this mummy alone, Emily has the habit of coming into my room, knocked the bathroom's door and asked repeatedly what I was doing! Kids...

Ha ha I'm flying again tomorrow, will take the opportunity to read then, as for tonight I will stick like superglue to my girls!
